Aviva Ariel-Donges, MS, MPH, Student Council Chair
The SfHP Student Advisory Council has been working hard this winter on behalf of our student members. Read below for a brief overview of what we have been up to!
Student Council Website Changes:
We are thrilled that the student section of the SfHP website has been overhauled to include many more professional development resources for health psychology trainees. Head over to the site to check out resources for graduate school, internship, postdoctoral fellowship, research funding, and employment opportunities, as well as links to our new diversity-focused blog and archives of our quarterly student newsletters.
New Diversity-Focused Blog:
Our current Diversity Committee Co-Chairs, Tamara Strong-Chavez and Darryl Sweeper, Jr., have initiated a student-oriented blog dedicated to addressing the intersection of diversity, social justice, and health psychology. Read their first blog post and share your thoughts on our student listserv (email@example.com).
Campus Representatives Program:
Our current Membership Committee Co-Chairs, Jessica Naftaly and Nicole Butler, are working with the Campus Representatives for the 2018-2019 school year – the largest group to date (52 in total!). As the spring semester begins, our Campus Representatives are making final preparations for their local events across the country related to networking, professional development, and health psychology didactics. Upcoming events include: Panels about health psychology practicums, internships, postdoctoral fellowships, and careers; guest speakers and discussions on topics ranging from trauma and pregnancy to GI psychology to recognizing sex trafficking in primary care patients; activities related to the ethics of self-care and burnout in psychologists; and health psychology research presentations.
Student Social Media Takeover:
Our current Communications Committee Co-Chairs, Claire Conley and Ke Ding, have partnered with SfHP’s Social Media Committee to bring student voices to the forefront of SfHP’s Twitter. On November 19th, @APADivision38 was filled with professional development tips, career advice, and highlights of student accomplishments in honor of Professional Development Month. A flurry of 99 tweets in just 8 hours resulted in almost 22,000 views, making it one of the most active days in SfHP’s Twitter history. Keep an eye out for student takeovers on Twitter in March and April!
New Student Travel Funding for 2019 APA Convention:
In collaboration with the SfHP Executive Board, the Student Advisory Council is proud to announce the creation of the SfHP Emerging Student Leaders Award! The SfHP Emerging Student Leader Travel Award consists of $1,825 in funding for a student member to attend the APA Convention in Chicago, IL, from August 8 – 11th, 2019. Details on selection criteria and application requirements are available on the SfHP website. Applications are due by March 31, 2019.
