Candidate for President-Elect
I am honored to be nominated for SfHP President. I am a professor in the Department of Psychology, Wayne State University in Detroit, director of its clinical psychology Ph.D. program, and licensed psychologist. I am a Fellow of our division, on the editorial boards of Health Psychology and several other journals, and have served as SfHP Treasurer for the past 6 years, overseeing the budget and supporting member-initiated programs that advance our science, practice, teaching, and advocacy. I have also been in leadership positions of the American Psychosomatic Society and the Council of University Directors of Clinical Psychology. With many colleagues and students, my NIH-funded research program develops and tests emotional disclosure, awareness, and expression interventions targeting unresolved stress in patients with chronic pain. I greatly value training and have mentored 38 Ph.D. recipients, most of whom are clinical health psychologists.
With these leadership experiences and my background in intervention development and graduate student mentoring, I feel that I am well positioned to serve SfHP’s very diverse membership as an effective president. In this role, I will encourage health psychologists to creatively and courageously expand the boundaries of our research, teaching, and practice into new populations and approaches. I hope to collaborate with our members who are on the front lines of practice to address the pressing needs that they encounter. Finally, I will focus on engaging and advancing into leadership positions our students and early career professionals, particularly women and other underrepresented members.
