Candidate for Division Representative to APA Council (2019)
As Past President and a Fellow of the Society for Health Psychology (SfHP) I would be honored to serve as your Representative on APA Council. During my presidency I have been involved in numerous roles related to policy advocacy and emerging national issues in our field. The Health Policy Council was established during my presidency in 2017 and continues to thrive both within the leadership of APA and nationally. One of the main goals of these outreach efforts has been to establish a stronger leadership role for our Society in the larger APA organization. Working closely with the Science Directorate and Practice Directorate has made me keenly aware of how important our voice is as a council representative. The emerging issues in APA continue to be central to our mission as a society of increasing our relevance in practice, science and policy. The role of the health psychologist in integrated care and the importance of elevating the visibility of our field continue to be underlying challenges. I have served our society in many leadership capacities over the past 30 years including leading a national working group on cost-effectiveness, serving as Member-at-Large, and associate editor. I also received the Senior Scientist Award from the society and an APA Presidential Citation for leadership in research, mentoring and service to professional societies. These experiences have uniquely positioned me to advocate on behalf of the society and members and I welcome the opportunity to serve as your Council Representative.
