Greetings from the SfHP Student Advisory Council

This time of year we can’t help but think about change. Our student members are starting a new year of graduate school while interns and postdocs are adjusting to new roles and responsibilities. Sometimes it seems as though that old adage really is true… “the only thing constant is change.”  In pursuit of careers as health psychologists, we move through various personal and professional phases and are challenged to adjust, adapt, and grow through these transitions. This year, we will focus on better understanding how the Student Advisory Council (SAC) can support our student members throughout the different phases of development. With greater knowledge and insight, we aim to foster the SfHP as a professional home for our student members as they transition into Early Career Professionals. We believe the SfHP is an excellent resource for information, guidance, and support for our student members. It is also the perfect place to engage in respectful discourse about timely – and sometimes divisive – professional topics.

Each year in August we observe a number of transitions within the SAC. We thank the individuals who have finished their tenure with the SAC for their service and leadership over the past two years. Special thanks to Jenny Warnick for her leadership and outstanding service during the past year as the SAC Chair. We look forward to continuing to benefit from her insight and contributions in the Past Chair role. We also thank the following individuals for their service, as they completed their tenure on the SAC in August 2017: Natasha DePesa (Membership Committee), Marissa Alert (Membership Committee), Angela Gutierrez (Diversity Committee), and Matt Jasinski (Diversity Committee). We would like to extend a warm welcome to Tamara Strong-Chavez and Jessica Naftaly, who are joining us on the Diversity and Membership Committees, respectively. We also welcome Aviva Ariel-Donges, who has been selected to serve as the Chair Elect. We are thrilled to have her on board. Finally, we welcome a new group of students who will be serving as Campus Representatives during the upcoming year. With over 40 graduate programs currently represented, we look forward to continuing to develop and grow this outreach program.
