Mark A. Lumley, Ph.D.
For the past six years, I have had the pleasure of serving the SfHP as Treasurer, providing fiscal oversight of society business, and advocating to use our funds to support member-initiated programs that advance our science, practice, teaching, and advocacy. With this experience and my professional work in treatment development and mentoring, I feel that I am well positioned to serve SfHP’s broad membership as an effective President. I am a Professor in the Department of Psychology, Wayne State University (Detroit), Director of its Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program, and licensed psychologist. I have an NIH-funded research program that develops and tests emotion-focused interventions targeting unresolved stress and conflict in patients with centralized chronic pain disorders. I am an Associate Editor of the Journal of Psychosomatic Research and on the editorial board of Health Psychology. I greatly value training and have mentored 38 Ph.D. recipients. As one who studies “disclosure,” I’ll share that I am married, have 4 young adult sons, manage a men’s soccer team (score rarely, but get injured often), and sing and teach at a social justice-focused Methodist church.
As your President, I hope to encourage health psychologists to expand the boundaries of research, teaching, and practice into new niches, populations, and approaches. I also will focus on engaging, retaining, and advancing into leadership positions our students, early career professionals, and underrepresented members. Finally, I look forward to collaborating with our many members who know the possibilities and challenges of clinical practice better than I.
