Many exciting things are happening and have happened within the Student Council!

This fall, we started the Campus Representative Program to increase inclusion and engagement of students across graduate programs that have a focus in health psychology. Currently, there are 43 Campus Representatives from 36 universities. Campus Representatives communicate the benefits of Division 38 membership and updates about Division 38 activities to other students at their respective programs. Additionally, they host Division 38-sponsored events on their campuses each year, which can be a brown bag or social event. The list of Campus Representatives will be posted on the Division 38 website. If you are interested in becoming a Campus Representative for your university, please email the Student Council at [email protected].

At the 2014 APA Convention in Washington D.C., we co-sponsored a panel with Division 22 (Rehabilitation Psychology) and Division 40 (Neuropsychology) titled “Professional Development Panel for Students in Rehabilitation Psychology, Health Psychology, and Neuropsychology.” Dr. Corwin Boake from the University of Texas-Houston Medical School (Division 40), Dr. Aaron Turner from VA Puget Sound Health Care System (Divisions 22 and 40), and Dr. Dawn Jewell from Health Psychology Associates in Greeley, CO (Division 38) presented on career development and their work within interdisciplinary settings. Thank you Dr. Jewell for sharing your experiences and providing guidance for future health psychologists! At APA, we also hosted the annual Training Directors Meet and Greet. We would like to thank all the training directors who attended the meet and greet, and we look forward to seeing them again next year!

Our three committees, Membership, Communication, and Diversity, have been working hard. Our Membership committee has been working on several projects aimed at helping the division better understand student needs. Our Communication committee has been increasing communication through our social media and listservs regarding Division activities and benefits of membership to students. Our Diversity committee recently started a project which will highlight health psychologists with “diverse jobs” on the listserv and the Division 38 website.

Lastly, a few of our Student Council members’ terms have ended. We would like to thank them all for their time on Student Council and the work they have devoted to Division 38. Thank you to Johnathan Duff (Membership), Sarah Mills (Diversity), Jennifer Nguyen (Diversity), and Patricia Moreno (Past Student Council Chair)! This fall, Student Council will be looking for two new members to add to our committees: Membership (2-year term) and Diversity (2-year term). Please look for the listserv announcement if you are interested in getting more involved in Student Council!
