The student council is excited to announce that we have finalized our program for the upcoming 2014 APA convention in Washington, DC! We designed our program to meet student needs and encourage every student affiliate to attend both our panel and networking event.
Professional Development for Students in Rehabilitation and Health Psychology and Neuropsychology
APA student affiliates across several APA divisions to include Divisions 22 (Rehabilitation Psychology), 38 (Health Psychology), and 40 (Clinical Neuropsychology) have demonstrated growing interest in working in these interdisciplinary medical settings and have increasingly sought opportunities to complete pre- and postdoctoral training in these settings. However, because students early in their graduate training may not be exposed to the specific training trajectories of these areas of specialization until the clinical internship level, advanced knowledge about what is required of each specialization at an earlier stage would be helpful for optimal planning of their remaining training steps (e.g., postdoctoral training, ABPP board certification) and ultimate career. The purpose of this symposium is to introduce student affiliate members of Divisions 22, 38, and 40 to the newly developed training tool (Webkit for Interdiscipinary Health Service Psychology Training), and to provide a panel discussion of training needs for students interested in pursuing careers in interdisciplinary medical settings. Three invited speakers (Dr. Corwin Boake, Division 40; Dr. Dawn Jewell, Division 38; and Dr. Aaron Turner, Divisions 22 and 40) are active members of multiple divisions who have contributed significantly to the profession. They will present summaries of their own career trajectories, and how their experiences working in interdisciplinary settings and involvement in APA divisions have enhanced their professional and personal development as researchers and clinicians. Student symposium discussants will guide a panel discussion with a number of structured questions for the panel speakers, and a period of time will be reserved at the end of the symposium for audience-generated questions.
